This is what I call a "comparison film".
The question, "How does it compare to------?" comes up in all creative endeavours. This is one of those films that raises that question according to me.
In the film they look at the differences between having a socially acceptible handicap (i.e. being "the work-a-holic jerk who has no emotional grounding) and being a so called "mentally challenged" person who has so much emotion he doesn't know what to do with it. The film asks what kind of parent the latter person could be. I saw this movie before entering into Fatherhood and again this week. Both times I was quite moved, not only with the whole idea of "who deserves to be a parent?" but by Sean Penn himself. In this movie he finally separated himself from the pack! It is so much more than acting. He has come a long way since Ridgemont High. My favorite Actor because he "is the character" in his work.
I love this movie! It's in my top 10 for sure.

The Station Agent
This film about a dwarf man and his quest to be left alone had me pondering many things for days afterwards. I was struck with the main character's battle with being different, and sympathized with that somehow. We all feel different than the group at times but only a few of us really know what that is truly like.
This film shows the viewer in very real ways, how what we need in life often creeps in no matter what we try to do to stop it. I would say it is not an overly exciting film (no special effects) but a good story that we can all get something from.
The music in this film is also quite remarkable giving me hope for musicians as well.
I enjoyed the lighting and the sense of reality the production crew was able to create. Very worthwhile!

Food, Inc.
This film, written by an investigative reporter, addresses the sad but true reality of the industrialization of the US food system's sources and buyers, as well as its effects and what you can do to help yourself. This is a very important film for all people to watch! It shows you why a double cheeseburger is 99 cents, while a pound of broccoli is over two dollars. Americans are not able to cook anymore. Do you ever wonder why diabetes is an epidemic, not uncommon as it used to be? Or why obesity affects 30 to 40 percent of Americans in our day?
The farms I grew up on are disappearing. The government is behind this. It is no accident! Remember, America was built with genocide and slavery. The destruction of healthy food is happening for a reason.
The answer is simple: Eat organic, grass-fed, local, heirloom. Cook with your kids, and enjoy food!
FIGHT BACK WITH EVERY BITE!
